... where everything went "up and down, sideways, slantways, and any other way you can think of”  - Roald Dahl

In 2020 Wind River created 9 new programs to uplift and nourish our survivors and their families during one of the most challenging years in recent history. We are extremely grateful to our resilient wellness practitioners who stepped-up to make all of this possible.  And thanks to our wonderful grantors and supporters, ALL PROGRAMS are still provided at no cost to survivors!   Click here for pictures!

Major Retreat events this year:
  • 21 day virtual, self-paced and interactive retreat with 68 participants (called "Wind River’s 21 Days of Magic Wellness Retreat".
  • Interactive 10 day virtual Cancer Wellness Retreat for lung cancer survivors
  • Interactive 7 day virtual Cancer Wellness Retreat for colon and other cancer survivors
  • 15 weekend get-away retreat experiences for survivors, frontline health care workers, and their families
  • 50+ days of opening the property for single day excursions for survivors and their families (called Wind River Forest Bathing)

Major Outreach Programs in 2020:
  • Provided over 1000 hours of one-on-one Survivorship and Healthy Eating Coaching, interactive workshops in Cooking, Healing Arts, Drumming, Healing Touch, Restorative yoga, Tai Chi and more
  • Created wellness oriented YouTube content including short Tai Chi videos, Sleep Support, Calming Meditations, etc. (some of which were translated into Spanish to support our Latina friends as well)
  • Held on-site Family Mushroom Log Weekend (50 participants came to make and take home their own Shiitake mushroom logs and learn about their health benefits)
  • Held 2020 Vision Board Workshop with Business (and Life) Coach Katie Mattson
  • Distributed 140 face masks in April, many to stage IV survivors without access to one early during the pandemic
  • Distributed “Baskets of Love” to 50 homes during the initial quarantine (volunteers delivered)
  • Distributed Angel Funds to support survivors in distress due to Covid and/or treatments
  • Provided Remote Healing Touch sessions for 25 survivors
  • Managed Wind River Teams for 24 Foundation, Colon Cancer Coalition, and Pledge the Pink – all wonderful grant providers to Wind River
  • Provided End-of-life support to alumni and their families
  • Mailed 275 Holiday Packages filled with love and inspiration (through our holiday Angel gift exchange and holiday art giving programs)
  • In January, held our annual Candle Lighting Ceremony to honor and remember those we have lost, but who will forever remain in our hearts.

Many survivors still ask us, but how much is this retreat or family get-away or nutrition coaching going to cost?  When we answer it is free, you can hear the surprise and sigh of relief at the same time!

This is because of 100's if not 1,000's of everyday people who donate directly or support one of our amazing grant providers.  So please give a huge round of thanks to all our individual supporters (including Gabrielle Haskell, friends of LynnMarie Longo, and Sandra Goldman all of their respective contributors), small business supporters (Haylo Healing Arts Lounge, Don Anthony Realty, Just-Jeepin-4-a-Cause, RAI Products, Wilderness Cove Tubing and Camping, Rocky River Road Club) and major sponsors 24 Foundation, Colon Cancer Coalition, Pledge the Pink Foundation, and the Lung Cancer Initiative of NC who make this all possible at NO CHARGE TO SURVIVORS and THEIR FAMILIES!!!  You truly are making a difference in the world with your actions and support.

And Cheryl, Dave and Shannon have SO MUCH gratitude for the wellness practitioners and volunteers who help us make our programs possible and want to specifically say thank you to:   Shirley Ballantyne, Robin Viar, Jack Godwin, Mike Gentile (Tai Chi Mike), Becca Odom, Greg Whitt, Glenna Sears-Brinker, Linda McCall, Michelle Wood, Dr. Chasse Bailey-Dorton, Magbis Love, Gabrielle Haskell, Raissa Urdiales, Mellisa Wheeler, Julie Lanford, Lori Ives-Godwin, Angela Hopper, Karen Haines, Katie Mattson, Sarah Norton, David Dahl, and of course our posse of Tom Sawyer Volunteers and Wind River Angels!!!

This holiday season, an artist and a member of the Caped Crusaders 4 Cures team has donated over 100 original pieces of art to Wind River. This is the second year of this generous art giving project by Raissa Urdiales and the Caped Crusaders 4 Cures.

This year we are sharing these originals with cancer survivors AND our wonderful front-line healthcare workers for all they do for us.

Thank you all for the smiles you create!

*  Caped Crusaders 4 Cures is a wonderful fundraising team who also supports our friends at 24 Foundation.

This month we wish to give a huge shout out to our men with cancer and share an excellent new(ish) group just for you!  Man Up to Cancer is the helpful and headstrong community built to inspire men — and the people who love them — to connect and avoid isolation throughout our cancer journeys.

Founder Trevor Maxwell shares, "Too often, men “check out” after a cancer diagnosis. We struggle with shame, depression, and loss of identity, all of which can lead to poor outcomes. Man Up to Cancer provides a wide range of digital content, as well as an insanely engaged Facebook group, to tackle the isolation problem head-on."

JOIN THE PACK TODAY!

Wind River's friend and Alum Joe Bullock runs the Facebook group, now over 800 men strong.  Joe, a stage 3 colon survivor, knows 'we are smarter and strong as a pack than we are as love wolves'.
