Below is a post from one of our retreat participants this last weekend. If we can help ease just one persons anxiety dealing with cancer we have succeeded. THIS is why we do what we do... "I have 'scanxiety'. I am going for my echo-cardiogram, PET scan and MRI today. Scanxiety is defined as the anxiety preceding tests and scans. This is followed by the anxiety waiting for the results. The black and white definition of how I am doing. Are the tumors shrinking? Is everything still going in the right direction? At a most wonderful Wind River Retreat this weekend I was shown how to easily access my heart. The heart tells the brain that we’ve got this. The brain can stand down. Quit worrying. I will be practicing this all day as I go through the tests and as I wait for the results." Ann Herlihy, Mississippi http://gracehopeandcancer.com/ |

Each year when we are between retreats and outreach programs for cancer survivors, we scurry to complete new "handyman" projects to improve our survivor's retreat experience. Each project starts as just an idea, but takes MANY hours of planning and labor after that.
This year our efforts have been building 1 mile of walking trails, adding Shitake mushroom logs, a new camping area, and a 100 foot stone wall around the cabin to protect it (hopefully) in the event of another flash flood like the one we had in 2013! All of these projects are still "works in progress" but are coming along nicely and could NOT be done without the help of variety of friends and volunteers. Every year the North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Program sponsors a two day Cancer Survivorship Summit for cancer survivors in our state. Now in its 8th year, over 200 Survivors and Caregivers attended!
This year the event was held in Asheville and not only did Shannon sit on the planning committee, but Wind River was instrumental in arranging for five of the presenters at this event! Shannon Carney did workshops on Healing with Art, Dave Pschirer did workshops on Healing in Nature,Rebecca Odom did workshops on Healing with Journaling, Greg Lathrop did workshops on Healing with Meditation and our own Shirley Ballantyne did two sessions on Healing with Healing Touch. It was a very well received event and we were privileged to help make it a success. Thanks to the NCCCP for continuing this worthwhile program!
![]() JULY 5, 2015 BY JULIE LANFORD MPH, RD, CSO, LDN ON AVERAGE, AMERICANS DRINK ABOUT THREE CUPS OF COFFEE PER DAY. AS A REMINDER, WE CONSIDER ONE CUP OF COFFEE TO BE 6 OUNCES, WHICH IS PRETTY SMALL IN TODAY’S TYPICAL COFFEE MUG!Historically, people have seen drinking coffee as a bad habit, associating it with other vices like alcohol consumption and smoking, but over the years, the health debate around coffee has become a subject of much contention. The question has been whether or not this drink causes more harm than good, and now, research sheds new light on the subject. CANCER PROTECTIONAccording to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), coffee consumption is unlikely to increase the risk of pancreatic and kidney cancer, and may actually reduce the risk of endometrial and liver cancer. Scientists have discovered several phytochemicals (yes, those cancer fighting nutrients we’re always talking about!) in coffee including chlorogenic and quinic acids. In addition, coffee is a good source of the B-vitamin riboflavin, a nutrient that helps your cells produce energy and promotes immune function.
