Way to go Joe Bullock (Co-Leader of Man-Up-To-Cancer, Colon Survivor, Wind River Alum and so much more!)

"I got a signed proclamation from Governor Roy Cooper to make the month of March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in North Carolina . I’m a stage3b colorectal cancer survivor. A routine colonoscopy saved my life . If you are 45 years or older schedule your colonoscopy today!"

There are two upcoming classes:  Cleaned-Up Comfort Food and Ditch the (processed) Sugar, join in for one or BOTH. Together, we learn how to prepare healthy foods and LOVE the foods that will LOVE us back.

Both classes are scheduled on Friday nights in March at 6:30pm - 8:00pm (The PERFECT Date night activity) Registration is required.

Cleaned-Up Comfort Food:
Friday, March 5th / 6:30pm - 8pm

Mashed potatoes, potato salad, casseroles, pasta with cream sauce. .I will share tips on how to cut calories without losing the flavor of our favorite comfort foods.

Ditch the (processed) sugar:
Friday, March 19th / 6:30pm - 8pm

So many sweeteners are available on the market as "healthy sugar alternatives" But what is the healthiest option for satisfying our sweet tooth?  We will look at many of these sugar options and make dessert with natural whole food sweeteners such as dates, fruits and fruit juices.

As always, it is optional to cook along with me in your kitchen, or simply watch, listen and learn.  Everyone can ask questions along the way!    Upon signing up, I will email you the shopping list and zoom link.

Hope to see you in the kitchen soon! ~ Cheryl

The power of a veggie sammich

Special Guest Piece by Mellisa Wheeler, Healthcare Professional at Levine Cancer Institute

Several years ago, I found myself in a bad, bad way. The kind of bad way where when you open your eyes in the morning, your first thought is “How soon can I close them again?” kind of way. My problem? Too big to define, too nebulous to navigate. I was cloaked in a tremendously personal pain, one that I worked at all costs to cover for fear of exposure of my ugly scars, yet managed to still wear and bear
outwardly like a bad perm.

Me: If only someone could see how badly I hurt.

Also me: If only I could disappear so no one would see how badly I am broken.

Then one day that started limply like the rest, I staggered into my office, empty of energy and heavy with heartache only to find someone did, in fact, see my suffering, despite my effort to avoid exposure and without hearing my excuses or explanations. Centered squarely on my desk sat a veggie sammich, a supermarket gift card, and a single-stemmed spring bloom. No note. An anonymous angel had appeared, whose silent service served to deliver me from darkness and save me from myself without a single post, like or share. I was seen and blessed without the burden of sacrificing my soul. What a priceless gift and a truly selfless act of service.

I wish every individual the gift of having their human hurts both recognized and protected by silent acts of service. While it might be worthy of a post and likely to generate all the likes, sometimes someone’s story and your part in saving it are better left unsaid.

21 Days of WONDERMENT

Wind River's first retreat of 2021

We are proud to have just completed our first 21 day virtual retreat of 2021 with over 80+ survivors participating!  With a blend of men and women and survivors with a variety of different cancers, we spent 21 days together exploring our current paths and finding new perspectives and new beginnings - all with the aid of daily messages and calls to actions from Wind River's dynamic duo-team of Shannon & Cheryl.

At the beginning, each survivor was asked for a single word reflecting where they hoped to be at the end of this retreat.  (see image).  At the end of the retreat, they shared some of what they gained from this experience, many of them reflecting on the power and importance of taking time for ourselves.  Here are a few additional final reflections:
  • I'm feeling blessed as I focus on my spiritual, mental and emotional health and well being...
  • It was a gift to connect with Wind River and to regain my footing throughout this experience. It helped me become more grounded in my positive attitude, strength and courage.  It was just the boost that I needed!
  • I feel like I have tool box FULL of ideas, projects, crafts, words, videos... to use for the past 21 days and also the rest of 2021 (and all future days) to add joy and hope to our lives; especially during the pandemic.
  • I HAVE HOPE!
Finally, we'd like to share the message one of the participant's uses to guide her through her day:

"God speaks to me through other people, but when I’m alone, I get to hear the whisper of that still small voice inside of me."
