Words of Wisdom from Wind River Alum Stacie Towe. Stacie recently completed with honors her undergraduate AND a Master’s degree in social work from Winthrop University.
The best wisdom that I can offer another survivor is to hang on to your faith, ask for help, and never give up on yourself! After nearly 15 years of running my own hair salon business, raising kids, and going through breast cancer treatments, I made the decision to go back to school and finish my college degree. I had left school at age 19 and it was a huge regret I wanted to rectify! When I thought about what I wanted to do, I knew that it had to involve helping other people. My own personal life history AND the wonderful therapists who were there to help me heal and move forward inspired me to want to be a therapist/social worker. My cancer diagnosis (and my magical visit and ongoing relationship with Wind River) only amplified my desire to work in a field where I can be of service to others facing difficult, not insurmountable challenges.
My advice to you - You need to rest and take care of yourself, but know that somewhere deep inside you, you have the strength and the courage to make it through anything!
