| It was an especially busy year here at Wind River in 2013. Here are just a few highlights: We started the year with construction. We finished the new front porch entrance, ordered 14 tons of building rock and flagstone, built a flat landing (Lenny's Landing), a stone patio and rock wall at creek side, ordered 14 MORE tons of rock, built several sets of stairs and a rock wall along the Tai Chi area - and that was just to start the year! All this construction work was accomplished with the help of various volunteers and supporters - THANK YOU for your efforts! In March we again partnered with Cancer Services in Winston Salem to provide a GYN specific retreat at their facility and held our annual Tom Sawyer (Volunteer) Day. In April we held our first Spring Retreat here on the premises and our 1st Annual Cancer Walk/Survivor Day here at Wind River (which was a tremendous success -- THANK YOU to all of our walkers)! In May we held our 2nd Spring Retreat and began work pressure washing the cabin for restaining. In June we fully re-stained the cabin AND brought on Cheryl Lecroy as a part time employee to help us with a variety of planning & execution tasks including providing nutritional demonstrations for other cancer support groups/organizations --- this is a HUGE step for us! July and August were spent gutting and fully remodeling the downstairs bath in the main house ---those of you who've stayed in the old bathroom will appreciate the big improvements! We also supported the 24-hours of booty 24 hour cycling fundraiser for cancer. In September and October we were back at it with two Fall Cancer Wellness Retreats. November we began work on our 1st On-line Holiday Fundraiser which helped raise over $7,000 for next years programs. Throughout all of this we support a variety of survivors with home visits, one on one coaching via phone and demos and workshops at other cancer support groups. As we approach the holidays we look back and are thankful for the friendships we've made and continued this year, we'll take some time for ourselves and we'll start our planning for NEXT YEAR! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Dave & Shannon |
